Welcome to my collection of writing prompts. The purpose of writing prompts is to give yourself ideas to write when you don't have any - either to start off a short story or to get yourself unstuck in the middle of a story when you don't know where to go.

I find writing prompts to be a really fun way to practice writing and give myself ideas. But when I tried looking for collections of prompts on the internet, I found lots of prompts like, "Write about an incident in which you..." For someone like me who thrives on fantasy writing, those aren't much fun.

So I made my own writing prompts. These prompts are intended for writers of fantasy and creative fiction primarily. Some of them are more lighthearted than others, and all of them are pretty vague. They are intended to get your imagination going, not to box you in! The prompts include objects, colors, situations, and types of people.

By using prompts, you can make writing a sort of game. I like to use a random number generator to pick a number from the prompts I have, and then I *have* to write a few paragraphs on that prompt. But I often don't stick too rigidly to the prompt topic - the topic of the prompt will be mentioned somewhere in what I write, but it isn't necessarily the focus. Click here for an example of a prompt and a writing from it.

However you choose to use these prompts, I hope you enjoy them and find them useful. If you have any comments or suggestions, or if you have used this page and found it helpful, please email me.
